Parts are scheduled to be delivered in the next weeks that will resolve these issues. We are sorry for any problems this may have caused any of our customers.
We use scores of customized parts that we have designed over the past 15 years or so. Over that period of time, shortages can develop for a variety of reasons but we believe we have them identified and addressed and we should be back in business on the products that use these parts very soon.

I am constantly reminded in my personal life as welll as in my professional life, of the necessity to use well-designed equipment. What do I mean by that?

My cell phone is an Apple iPhone 6. Although I had experienced a problem 8 months into its life, Apple promptly replaced it. Other than that issue, this phone in addition to other iPhones I have owned, have all been good performers. I regularly drop it and it comes right back for more punishment.

The table saw that my primary wood worker uses is a high quality, commercial grade unit costing $2-3,000 It also works well and doesn't fail. It does need a new motor now and again due to wear, but other than that, my craftsman can rely on that tool to get the job done.

My Toyota car is almost 10 years old. I bought it specifically because I knew that a Toyota would take me well into the future with very little maintenance. I am happy to report, it has done exacly that and I regularly joke that I will drive it to the nursing home some day!

Our Ball Winders and Swifts are like my woodworker's table saw and my Toyota. All of these tools are well-designed and being well designed, the designers have endeavored to design tools that would give their users a sufficiently long product life without a lot of failures or breakdowns.

Our ball winders and swifts are so well designed, I put them in the Apple and Toyota class of products. Sure, the ball winder needs to be cleaned occasionally, and the rubber o-ring needs to be replaced every 2-3 years. But that is minor and the fact that they are made of substantial component strength and quality, combined with a World Class design means that these products will outlive me. I can only hope that they will outlive their owners as well and that some day a fiber artist in the future will look back at the quality of these tools and say to themselves: "they don't make them the way they used to anymore" (when comparing them to similar tools made during their own timeframe). In that sense, they will have perfomed longer than the Apple iPhone and Toyota car which means we will have suceeded in making a World Class product.

Always use the best tools that you can afford.

We have decided to end the distribution of DVDs for our Learn to Spin Kit. We had sold hundreds and hundreds of these great kits over the years. They all contained DVDs. But since most everyone has a smart phone or other device or a computer which is connected to the Internet, steaming videos have become much more popular nowadays. So, we decided to get rid of the DVD and simply use the streaming video method instead.

"I have seen the demise of the following technologies during my lifetime:

45 RPM Records

LP Albums

8 Track Tape cartridges

Cassette Tapes

CD's

and soon, DVDs

Yes, even the popular DVD will be going, going, gone in the near future, I suspect."

Here is a 2 minute teaser from the actual video.

We truly believe that most customers will welcome this changeover to streaming video as it is much more convenient and a lot less problematic as compared to DVD players.

As part of this change we have also reduced the price by $5.00. The streaming video is also less than the DVD if purchased separately (just $9.99).

When a customer buys the Kit, instead of a DVD they will receive a special YouTube address code that they will enter into their browser which will display the video. They can watch the video as often as they like. This video, however, will not be a public video and visitors to our Youtube channel will not be able to view it.

Online Purchasers of the Video will receive a pdf download from our online store which will contain the special YouTube address.

Tension - Yarn's best friend (and worst enemy)

Bob Shroyer

Tips

Did you know that Yarn tension is additive? That means that if you have a yarn path that bends in 2 places that the tension is being affected by 2 different sources of tension. Also, the solidity of the yarn guide can also cause the tension to vary. The yarn guides must be rigid and must not vary. The tool that is receiving the yarn from the source is impacted by this varying tension.

The ball winder for example, is dealing with fast moving yarn so when you alter the tension while it is moving at that speed, all heck can break loose. So if you maintain consistent tension and speed and keep your hands off of the yarn while winding onto a ball winder, you will be best off. Simply holding the yarn in your hand can also play havoc because your hand moves around ever so slightly and when it does, it affects the tension. Learn to use and depend on the fixed yarn guides that are on the equipment (ball winder, meter, swift and you will be much better off).

Not enough tension can also be a big problem. Tension is what keeps the yarn tight enough so that it does not wrinkle up or go limp. Yarn does not like to go limp and neither should you. Once you knit with it you will be applying the final tension on the yarn and you probably already know that the tension you exert with your needles is key to producting a properly knitted project.

So from beginning to end, tension is key. Not too much and not too little. But keep in mind that tension is like an addition problem. 2+2 = 4. If you want 4 and not 6 or 2, then keep an eye on all of the sources of tension in your kniting process (winding and knitting).

(Note: we are adding to the list and expect to have it completed by end of July 2015).The number of our units in the field has grown tremendously over the years and as they age, they may need upgrades, adjustment or even repairs. We have always handled such activities in the past but now a customer can see the fee schedule and also submit a request.

A user may also purchase spare parts and do the work themselves. We actually prefer that users do their own adjustments and minor upgrades, etc., so our enhanced section on these topics should facilitate that better.

We do have many videos on our youtube channel as well so be sure to check that.

But in most cases it just has to go! Well as I was moving the old website over to the new one, it was a very similar experience. Throwing old pictures away and other "stuff" that I just did not need anymore. Well, it was and still is hard (since I am still working at it right now). But I know from experience that I will feel much better when I have completed the "clean-out" or "move". I just wanted to share with those of you who have never done a website before that it is like cleaning out a house full of rooms. You get the idea, I am sure.
